Advice for Overseas Trained Teachers coming to the UK

Are you thinking of coming to the UK to teach and live?

Many UK Schools are open to interviewing over video so you can be offered before you arrive but what questions should you ask of your prospective employer and what research should you undertake. Hopefully, this guide will give you some food for thought.

    Research

    • Take a good look at the website for the school you are interviewing at
    • Review location – is there accommodation available and good transport links?
    • Read the school’s latest Ofsted report
    • Check the school curriculum
    • For Primary Teachers review phonics, for Secondary Teachers find out about the new specification of 9 to 1 and Progress 8 and look at exam boards – EdExcel and AQA
    • Research Schemes of Work

    Questions

    • How do you track student data?
    • What are the curriculum plans?
    • Are there shared schemes of work?
    • Will you have a partner teacher?
    • What exam board do they use?
    • What are the medium-term plans?
    • Behaviour levels

Moving to a new country is daunting, but with research and preparation you can hit the ground running.

Don’t forget you’ll need to check about healthcare, applying for a national insurance number and setting up a bank account.

If you are seeking an agency to help you with the transition, LT Support have experience placing Teachers from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Europe. Email info@LT-Support.co.uk and we can arrange a conversation over video to discuss what you are looking for.
