What is an ECT (Early Career Teacher)
This September sees the start of a new programme for teachers in training through the Early Career Framework. Upon graduating from their PGCE or BEd programme, the term Early Career Teacher (ECT) replaces Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).
The programme is designed to help educators early in their careers to develop expertise and improve wellbeing and job satisfaction with a view to retaining more new teachers within the field.
From the 1st September 2021 all ECTs who start their induction will be required to follow the two years induction as opposed to the previous one year.
So what else has changed?
- ECTs will have a 10% reduced timetable in the first year and a 5% reduced timetable in year 2 of induction.
- There will now be two formal assessment points as opposed to the previous three. One midway through induction and one at the end with regular progress reviews.
- Each ECT will have a mentor
The programme is a blended learning experience designed to provide teachers and mentors with high-quality, evidence-informed training and materials alongside scaffolding to ensure effective mentoring.
Five fundamental areas of practice will be undertaken with the framework:
- Pedagogy
- Curriculum
- Assessment
- Behaviour
- Professional Behaviours
The focus on Adaptive Teaching, Classroom Practice, Subject and Curriculum will hopefully mean Teachers newly qualified will find they are more prepared to go it alone at the end of the two years under a programme that will continue to develop for their first 5 years of teaching.
