Gain iQTS as an Overseas Trained Teacher before coming to the UK

  • Gain iQTS as an Overseas Trained Teacher before coming to the UK

Recently there have been changes to the proposed requirements for QTS to non-UK Teachers. As of the 1st February 2023 teachers of Maths, Science or MFL from a number of countries may now be eligible for QTS – but what about everyone else?

The Department for Education is gradually opening up the criteria across the rest of the year. You can check if you’re eligible by visiting https://apply-for-qts-in-england.education.gov.uk/eligibility/start

However, you may find you are instead eligible for international qualified teacher status instead.

This is a new qualification that meets the same high standard of Qualified Teaching Status issued in England. This qualification is available to teachers outside the UK.

iQTS could be for you if you tick one of the following boxes:

    • You have no previous teaching qualifications or experience, and would like to gain a professional teaching qualification leading to automatic qualified teacher status (QTS)(opens in new window)
    • You have some teaching experience, and would benefit from training and mentoring for a professional teaching qualification leading to automatic qualified teacher status (QTS)(opens in new window)
    • You are already a teacher, but not eligible to apply for QTS through the Teaching Regulation Agency or assessment only

Once you complete iQTS training and successfully pass the assessment process you will automatically gain QTS (Qualified Teaching Status) by England’s Department for Education.
